Back Pain and CD ? Chiropractice, which involves manipulation of the spinal column, is becoming increasingly common. But new research suggests that there may be a link between Crohn's Disease and spinal misalignments. The study by Japanese chiropractor Dr Yasuhiko Takeda and colleagues found that chiropractic care could correct misalignments and related problems of the spine that affect the function of our nervous and immune systems. Dr Takeda's research involved treating 17 Crohn's patients with spinal adjustments to reduce the spinal displacement in the thoracic and lumber regions, and comparing these with 34 patients who did not receive spinal adjustments. Of the 17 who were given treatment, 12 showed long term and stable remission in their Crohn's Disease. Extract taken from NACC NEWS Autumn 2003.
Probiotics for CD ? Although the causes of Crohn's Disease are unknown, three main factors are implicated: The Immune System, Genes and Gut Bacteria. Several factors suggest that gut bacteria may play a role in IBD: The most common sites of inflammation are those where the largest number of gut bacteria are found (end of the small intestine and colon). And those where the contents of the intestine move most slowly. Some antibiotics (which kill bacteria) can help treat Crohn's. Researchers have found differences between the bacteria in the guts of people with Crohn's and those of people without IBD. People with Crohn's have different bacteria on the mucosa (inner gut wall) and more bacteriods and E.coli, also they have fewer lactic acid bacteria. Evidence that changing the balance of bacteria in the gut reduces the severity of Crohn's. The balance can be changed by antibiotics, but prolonged use leads to the development of resistant bacteria and can kill 'beneficial' bacteria. Probiotics contain beneficial bacteria such as lactic acid bacteria and can change the balance so that healthy flora can survive. Extract taken from NACC ered, June 2003.
